New IMB Building: Integrated Scientific Information Center for Marine and Aquatic Biota of South China Sea

Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has gain a special recognition in leading expertise in the field of Oceanography, Marine Science and Marine Biotechnology on it missions to become a leading center of learning and research in Malaysia.

UMT through Oceanographic Institute (INOS) and the Institute of Marine Biotechnology (IMB) has had a series of extensive research within and outside the country, including collaboration with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) towards establishment of Biodiversity Museum in 2004 as one unit with INOS.

Through education, learning and research collaboration under the scientific voyage, the museum now has a collection of over 4000 stores in various fields. Besides IMB, there are marine microbial samples and marine life species that can be exploited and used for research not only at UMT, but also nationwide. IMB has taken the initiative to set up database records or national marine bioinformatic centers (NABTIC) to facilitate the systematic, identification, and rapid detection.

Recognizing the importance of record keeping systems of biodiversity and other fields related on global level, an Integrated Reference Center for Marine, Oceanography and Marine Biotechnology has been proposed. It will be a huge reference center especially for marine expert, postgraduate students for data references, preservation and conservation of the marine heritage of our country.

Therefore, an integrated IMB complex has been approved by government and the construction has been started since last February and will be completed in 2018. The complex consists of two-storey buildings and a number of laboratory and gallery space that will become an important regional referral center.
