ABOUT ICAMB

Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) is a leading university in the specialized field of ocean and aquatic resources studies. Located on a mangrove-lined coast in front of the South China Sea, UMT is well-positioned to take on research and development (R&D) programs related to its specialty area. This in turn will drive sustainable use of the vast natural resources of the oceans and other aquatic resources that are important for wealth creation and nation building. Based on these priorities, the Institute of Marine Biotechnology (IMB) was established in 2006 to lead R&D&C activities in the field of marine biotechnology. The establishment of IMB is in line with the country’s efforts to develop biotechnology as one of the core sectors to generate economic growth and improve community well-being in line with the National Biotechnology policy.

ICAMB, the Institute of Climate Adaptation and Marine Biotechnology (Formerly known as the Institute of Marine Biotechnology, IMB) was established at Universiti  Malaysia Terengganu with the aim of developing and excelling in research, innovation and commercialization activities related to the field of Marine Biotechnology.

The Institute of Marine Biotechnology (IMB) was established internally from June 15, 2006 (Senate 1/47/2006) and was officially confirmed by the Higher Education Committee Meeting No. 4/2008 from February 26, 2008.

In 2020, the Climate Change and Adaptation Laboratory (CCA laboratory) was developed at IMB with the LRGS research grant under RMK10 by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education (KPT). Starting 1 July 2023, the management of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu has agreed to rebrand IMB to ICAMB with the aim of exploring the field of climate change and adaptation of aquatic organisms in line with KPT’s aspirations.

In-house enhanced fractions that are prepared from powdered biota and small molecules produced either from hit fractions or chemical synthesis are stored systematically in this repository

Aquatic biotechnology involves the application of direct and indirect use of aquatic organisms or parts or products of living aquatic organisms in their natural or modified forms such as microalgae, seahorses, sea cucumbers etc.

Various micro-organisms isolated from marine and aquatic resources are identified and systematically stored in this repository. Such micro-organisms include bacteria, fungi and microalgae that may have vast   potentials in producing valuable bio-products.

ICAMB OBJECTIVE

To promote cooperation among scientist and researcher at UMT

To promote the development of new knowledge and technology in marine biotechnology.

To provide state of art facilities for research in the field of marine biotechnology at UMT.

To established research link or cooperation with other local and foreign research centre.

To develop entrepreneurship among scientist.

To embark the commercialization of the products from research activities.
