RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT
A vast number of marine resources can convert simple substrates into products that the organisms need for growth and survival. One of the main tasks is to carry out sustainable collection and identification of marine microorganisms with vast potentials for the production of secondary metabolites as drug candidates. The isolated marine microbes and secondary metabolites are then deposited into the respective microbial, natural and synthetic product repositories. In addition, researchers are also actively identifying new algae as important sources of high value bioproducts for edible (polyunsaturated fatty acids, anti-oxidative agents) and non-edible (biofuels) applications. Various tools ranging from molecular biology to bioprocess are being utilised to increase the production of oils in algae. Beside algae, researchers are also looking into the applications of bioproducts from horseshoe crab and seahorse.
