BIOTECH TALK SERIES 12/2014
Annual program of the Institute of Marine Biotechnology (IBM), Biotech Talk Series 12/2014 was held on 9 September 2014 at the Auditorium INOS, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu ( UMT). The theme of the program is Moving Forward with Biotechnology.
Invited speaker for this occasion was Prof. Dr. Thomas H. MacRae and Dr. Joseph A. Resnick. Prof. Dr. Thomas H. MacRae is a prominent researcher in the field of molecular cell biology. He is currently a senior professor at the Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada. He held the position of Chair at the Department of Biology at Dalhousie University from 2007-2014. His research centers on molecular analysis of diapause, a physiological state characterized by dormancy and enhanced stress tolerance. Gene expression during initiation, maintenance and termination of diapause is investigated in embryos of the crustacean Artemia franciscana, as are the functions of molecular chaperones and LEA proteins during diapause. Prof. MacRae has published over 150 refereed journal papers, written multiple reviews and books during his tenure. He serves as a visiting professor at the Institute of Marine Biotechnology, UMT since 2012.
Dr. Joseph A. Resnick is a graduate of Westinghouse Technical School with degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and Robotics Design. Dr. Resnick holds a BA/BS Degree with Double Major in the area of Clinical Psychology and Restorative Medicine from University of Pittsburgh. He holds a Master of Business Management Degree with specialization in Earth and Space Health Systems Management from the Military College of Vermont, Vermont College, where he was a NASA Scholar-In-Residence. He holds a Ph.D. Degree in Environmental Studies from the Union Institute and University of Cincinnati with specialization in Bioremediation and Concentration in Biodefense. He possesses lateral skill sets in biology, anatomy and physiology, medicine, electrical/mechanical engineering, robotics design, earth and space health systems management, air craft component design, defense security logistics/programs and low observable technology. He is currently a senior research fellow at the Institute of Marine Biotechnology, UMT
