NATURAL PRODUCT AND MARINE MICROBIOME (NPMM)

Natural Product and Marine Microbiome (NPMM) program explores the potential of marine organisms and their microbiomes in the development of novel therapeutics. Marine life, including plants, animals, and microorganisms, produces a wide array of bioactive compounds that have been shown to have medicinal properties. This program aims to discover and characterize these natural products, focusing on how marine microorganisms (like bacteria) contribute to the health and functioning of their ecosystems. By studying the microbiome—the collection of microorganisms living in and around marine organisms—researchers hope to identify new compounds with potential applications in medicine, such as anti-cancer agents, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory drugs. This program plays a pivotal role in unlocking the therapeutic potential of marine biodiversity.
