ABOUT ICAMB

Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) is a leading institution in ocean and aquatic resource studies. Located along a mangrove-rich coastline facing the South China Sea, UMT is ideally situated to carry out research and development (R&D) in these areas. This supports the sustainable use of marine and aquatic resources, contributing to economic growth and national development.

To strengthen this focus, the Institute of Climate Adaptation and Marine Biotechnology (ICAMB) was established at UMT to lead research, innovation, and commercialization in marine biotechnology.

Originally founded as the Institute of Marine Biotechnology (IMB) on June 15, 2006 (Senate 1/47/2006) and officially endorsed on February 26, 2008 (Higher Education Committee Meeting No. 4/2008), the institute aligned with the National Biotechnology Policy to help drive economic and social progress through biotechnology.

In 2020, the Climate Change and Adaptation Laboratory (CCA Lab) was introduced at ICAMB under the Long-Term Research Grant Scheme (LRGS) during Malaysia’s 10th Development Plan (RMK10), funded by the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT).

Effective 1 July 2023, the institute was officially rebranded as ICAMB to reflect its expanded focus on climate change and the adaptation of aquatic organisms, in support of national priorities set by KPT.

FLAGSHIP PROGRAMS

IMB is fortunate to have researchers with various expertise under the five research programmes. Realising that more can be achieved by combining their expertise,  three multi-disciplinary based flagship projects have been identified in IMB.

Marine Drug Discovery

In-house enhanced fractions that are prepared from powdered biota and small molecules produced either from hit fractions or chemical synthesis are stored systematically in this repository

Marine Microbes

Various micro-organisms isolated from marine and aquatic resources are identified and systematically stored in this repository. Such micro-organisms include bacteria, fungi and microalgae that may have vast   potentials in producing valuable bio-products.

Aquatic Biotechnology

Aquatic biotechnology involves the application of direct and indirect use of aquatic organisms or parts or products of living aquatic organisms in their natural or modified forms such as microalgae, seahorses, sea cucumbers etc.

OBJECTIVE

To promote cooperation among scientist and researcher at UMT

To promote the development of new knowledge and technology in marine biotechnology.

To provide state of art facilities for research in the field of marine biotechnology at UMT.

To established research link or cooperation with other local and foreign research centre.

To develop entrepreneurship among scientist.

To embark the commercialization of the products from research activities.
