Innovation, Knowledge Transfer and Commercialization (IKTC)

In the era of global economic uncertainty, the role of universities become more diverse and challenging. Research institutes and centres within universities are urged to generate revenue and to be more competitive in research direction that can contribute to private and social enterprising. Thus, it is crucial to conducts scientific research in the field of technology transfer, entrepreneurial development, foresight projects and innovative systems management. Therefore, to allow these roles to be focused at IMB, Innovation, Knowledge Transfer and Commercialization (IKTC) Unit was created to emphasize the following aspects.

1) Offering laboratory facilities and services

2) Identifying research project that highly potential to be developed as pre-commercialization product

3) Fostering the collaboration with industry and government agencies to help commercialize the products produced by the activities of R & D

4) Monitoring and managing the operation of the ISO 17025 (granted in December 2016)

5) Empowering two social innovation projects related to sea horses and horse shoe crabs as Translational Research Project to benefit the local community

TAL Kit (Rapid Endotoxin Detection Kit)

Detection of the presence of endotoxin contamination in drugs and devices require a good kit such as the TAL KIT. An extract of blood cells or amoebocytes from the horseshoe crab reacts with bacterial endotoxin, which is a membrane component of gram-negative bacteria, and has been proven to be a valuable diagnostic reagent for endotoxin detection. This makes TAL Kit, which uses Malaysia’s local species, a very quick and effective solution as compared to the normal Rabbit Pyrogen Test.

Seagold Liquid

This is a product invention of golden sea cucumber (Stichopus variegates) extract which is packed in sachet form of 15mL liquid. The mixture includes 3gm of the extract, natural flavour, chicory extract and RO water. Through the invention, the foul smell of sea cucumber extract is successfully eliminated. Blended with natural simple sugar oligosaccharide from chicory roots, which is a known remedy for diabetic type II, and melon flavour, the product attracts even small children to consume it. HEME-1 additive for Marine Agar Cultivation

There are many issues regarding isolation of marine microbes from sea water. This is because less than 3% of marine bacteria has been cultivated. Our experience showed that most of the isolates from marine environment lost during the subculturing activities. Available media usuak=lly manage to cultivate the fast growing marine microbes which acquire less bioactive compounds for the industry. Most of the marine microbes are slow growers and easily overcome by fast growing microbes. New media agar is important to proceed with isolation and identification of highly potential marine microbes with industrial importance.

Translational Research Project of the Sea Horse and Horsehoes Crab Preservation Program

UMT continues it social innovation efforts to develop the community with the establishment of the Translational Research Project of the Sea Horse and Horsehoes Crab Preservation Program for the Setiu community. The launch of the translational research project was officiated by Dato ‘Seri Idris Jusoh, Minister of Higher Education Malaysia at the Gong Batu Jetty Complex, Setiu Wetlands, Setiu, Terengganu. The main purpose is to reintroduce the habitat in Setiu Wetlands and the findings in the lab are translated for the benefit of the community. It also serves as a catalyst to help local communities generate side income. This is a knowledge transfer program in equipped the local community towards develop nation in line with TN50’s planning.



The Horseshoe Crab (HSC) Translational Research Programme is an initiative carried out by ‘Horseshoe Crab Research Group’ (HCRG), IMB. The purpose of the programme is to increase horseshoe crab population in Tanah Bencah Setiu that once was the habitat of the creature. In addition, since the blood extracted from this unique animal is used commercially to detect the presence of endotoxin, it gives a good opportunity for the local fishermen to increase their income in supplying horseshoe crabs to interested parties. Here, HCRG will be responsible in collecting the blood from horseshoe crabs without harming them and subsequently releasing them back to the wild to ensure their sustainability. HCRG also continuously offers advise and awareness to the local communities and students on the importance of conservation efforts on this pre-historic animal.



Seahorse Translational Research Programme is launched to increase seahorse population by providing training to local communities in breeding seahorses as well as to carry out conservation-oriented research on seahorses. Therefore, in the long term, this programme will increase an income of local communities as a result of supplying seahorses to interested parties. More importantly, in order to conserve and increase the seahorse population in the wild, half of the total number of seahorses bred by the local communities will be released to the wild. Thus, this programme will also benefit the local edu-tourism based industries. In addition, this programme also provides training to undergraduate students in relevant areas under ‘Internship Program’ as part of their softskill development programme.
