Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), located about 20 km north of Kuala Terengganu in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, is a leading public university in the areas of ocean studies and aquatic resources. Institute of Marine Biotechnology (IMB) is UMT’s initiative in the area of marine biotechnology research for Malaysia. IMB’s establishment is in line with the country’s effort to develop biotechnology as one of the core sectors to generate knowledge and economic growth in the era of K-economy.

Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), is a leading public university which focuses on Ocean studies and Aquatic resources.

Institute of Marine Biotechnology (IMB) was formed in 2008 to spearhead the R&D&C activities in the area of marine biotechnology. With the main goal to become a leading research institute in the said area, IMB overarching objectives are to provide state-of-the-art facilities, to promote collaboration among researchers locally and internationally, and, to enhance the discovery of new knowledge in the area of marine biotechnology.

Three research programmes (1) Natural and Synthetic Products; (2) Immune and Molecular Therapeutics, and (3) Applications of Marine Resources, together with a Core Facilities unit, were established. Various initiatives have been carried out such as the development of unique repositories for biota, natural and synthetic products as well as marine micro-organisms, and, the acquisition of high-end equipment such as high content screening, nuclear magnetic resonance and advanced mass spectrometry. Therefore, all these efforts together with highly motivated researchers, IMB is set to become a reference center in Marine Natural Products and Drug Discovery at the national and regional levels which is also in line with our country effort to develop biotechnology as one of the core sectors in bioeconomy and green technology.

Thus, with the well-equipped labs and well-trained personnel, we are offering our best services to the potential clients in the said and related areas.

The Institute of Marine Biotechnology research focus on marine biotechnology compliments well with the three research thrusts identified under the National Biotechnology Policy which are Healthcare, Agricultural and Industrial Biotechnology. IMB’s focus is on fundamental and applied biotechnology research with a wide range of materials collected from the ocean bed, shorelines and mangroves. IMB promotes sustainable management and optimal use of marine resources through the use of cutting edge technology and knowledge.
